Comparative Study of the authenticity of Sunnah from the Perspective of Critical Hadith reformists (Case Study: Samer Islambuli, Muhammad Saeed Ashmawi, and Ismail Kurdi)

Abstract

Throughout the history of Islam, the authenticity of Sunnah (tradition) and Ahadith (narrations) in understanding the Qur’an has been a point of consensus among interpreters of all sects, albeit with slight variations in exemplifications. However, in the contemporary era, a new approach has emerged among reformist thinkers who, in contrast to Qur’anists who completely reject tradition, have critiqued and refined hadith collections and sought to reduce the extent of the authority attributed to tradition. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the views of Samer Islambuli, Muhammad Saeed Ashmawi, and Ismail Kurdi, who are recognized as critical hadith reformists. It will examine their perspectives on the authority of tradition and assess the differences and similarities in their opinions on this matter. The findings indicate that although the moderate spectrum of critical hadith reformists is often portrayed as a movement committed to the authority of Sunnah—critiquing only verbal Sunnah—there exists a historical perspective within their views that regards Sunnah as a historical issue resulting from the understanding of the Prophet (PBUH). Additionally, the denial of the legislative and revelatory nature of Sunnah, along with the assertion that the Prophet (PBUH) is not infallible from error, oversight, and forgetfulness, are also among the viewpoints articulated by the thinkers of this movement
